Substantial is looking for a senior-level software engineer to provide technical leadership and guidance to our cross-disciplinary team of product strategists, designers, and developers and join us in our belief in the power of technological innovation to improve our lives and society. Together, our teams imagine and build ambitious products and services for our clients who range from up and coming startups to mission-focused non-profit organizations to Fortune 500 corporations.We’re open to candidates not based in Seattle and will support remote/hybrid work even when there isn’t a global pandemic.
What you’ll do:- Be a valued member of our autonomous project teams
- Iterate and experiment to deliver on new and existing products
- Be a technical leader both within your project team, your department, and the organization
- Collaborate with engineers, product owners, designers, and clients with a human-centered mindset
- Work with modern tech stacks/tools, and advance our practice in software delivery
- Work with clients from a variety of industries in a variety of technologies
- Work across the full stack, seeing features through from concept to delivery
- Small project-focused teams, each with autonomy to make decisions
- Project variety w.r.t. scope, industry, tech stack, and duration
- Exposure and expertise with modern technologies and frameworks
- Overtime is rare and discouraged

- Working hours? We operate within the Pacific Standard time zone for collaboration, but teams are open to experiment as long as there is a shared agreement that works with the team and client
- An experienced developer with at least 5 years of experience in either front or back end web technologies, with a strong interest in learning technologies across the stack
- Passionate about user experiences
- Knows and cares about sound product delivery practices like continuous delivery and automated testing
- Values high quality, maintainable code, collective code ownership, and continuous improvement
- Curious and collaborative, open to occasional pair programming and mentoring/learning from others
- Inclusive and open minded
- Open to working within the Pacific time zone for collaboration
- Based in the USA or Canada
- Have professional experience with TypeScript, React, Node.js and/or Ruby on Rails
- Have led technology on a project team before
- Have experience in client services
- Have experience with service-oriented and/or event-driven architectures
- Have mobile development experience in Swift, Kotlin, or React Native
