Wastewater Treatment Operator-in-Training

Grade 8 – Monthly Salary $3762 - $4785

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under direction of the Wastewater Division Manager and the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor, performs semi-skilled operation and maintenance duties in a secondary wastewater treatment plant. These duties are routine and performed within guidelines provided during training. Most work is subject to checks and controls. Employee will work under direct supervision of a qualified plant operator and as more experience is gained, employee is expected to perform duties more independently. Employee monitors, and maintains plant equipment including engines, motors, compressors, and pumps to control unit processes; ensures wastewater treatment plant operates within regulatory guidelines; performs adjustments and repairs to plant equipment; collects samples for laboratory testing; performs laboratory testing; performs maintenance on treatment facility equipment and grounds.

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory Requirements:

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying as determined by the City of Redmond.

High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized training in wastewater treatment plant operations or a related field and/or post-high school education in related courses.

Special Requirements/Licenses:

The position requires employees to operate a motor vehicle in the course of their position. Possession of, or must obtain within thirty (30) days from date of hire, a valid Oregon driver’s license, and have a safe driving record.

Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire, a valid Oregon CDL license of the required classification to operate Public Works Department vehicles and equipment.

Must obtain Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Wastewater Treatment Grade I Certificate within fourteen (14) months of hire.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, any certifications or licenses required by City, State or Federal agencies to work in the position assigned.

Desirable Requirements:

For desirable requirements to be considered, one must have met the minimum requirements noted above:

Education:

One (1) year of post-high school education, accumulation of academic credits documented on transcripts in the fields of engineering, chemistry, water/wastewater technology, physical, biological, or applied sciences, mathematics, or operation management.

Work Experience:

 One (1) year verifiable work experience or training in one of the following fields or related fields:

 Collection system operation and maintenance

 Stormwater system operation and maintenance

 Water treatment or distribution system operation and maintenance

 Wastewater treatment system operation and maintenance

 General maintenance and construction

 Industrial, Pre-treatment, septic system maintenance, water testing laboratory, or storm water

Management

Underground utilities general construction

Wastewater Treatment Operator I

Grade 10 – Monthly Salary $4147 - $5275

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory Requirements:

High school diploma, or equivalent, plus a minimum of twelve (12) months verifiable work experience and training in wastewater treatment or similar industrial facilities which has provided specific knowledge in the area assigned; or any equivalent work experience, education and training noted below which demonstrates the ability to perform the described job duties. Relative work experience includes:

Collection system operation and maintenance

Stormwater system operation and maintenance

Water treatment or distribution system operation and maintenance

Wastewater treatment system operation and maintenance

Industrial, Pre-treatment, septic system maintenance, water testing laboratory, or storm water

management

Underground utilities general construction

General maintenance and construction

Wastewater Collection Operator III

Grade 14 – Monthly Salary $5041 - $6412

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under direction of Wastewater Division Manager and the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor, oversees and participates in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining plant equipment including engines, motors, compressors, and pumps to control unit processes; ensures waste treatment plant operates within regulatory guidelines; performs adjustments and repairs to plant equipment; collects samples for laboratory testing; performs laboratory testing; performs maintenance on treatment facility equipment and grounds. Most work is subject to checks and controls. Employee is expected to be able to perform duties independently with minimal supervision.

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory Requirements:

High school diploma, or GED equivalent, and college level course work in math, science, biology, wastewater plant operations and maintenance, and related subjects; and a minimum of three (3) years of verifiable work experience in wastewater treatment, regulatory compliance and/or environmental analysis; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the above duties and meet the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Treatment System Operator Qualifications may be considered.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge and understanding of process control optimization, operation and maintenance activities required to operate an activated sludge wastewater treatment process. Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and computer process control.

Knowledge of advanced chemical analysis procedures, including qualitative and quantitative analytical chemistry and biological hazards involved in the work in a laboratory. Knowledge of proper operation of laboratory equipment, and appropriate methods of collecting, preserving, and preparing samples for testing.

Ability to operate automobiles, pickup and utility trucks, equipment, machines, and tools safely and in conformance with applicable laws, regulations, and work rules; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; work independently or as part of a work crew in performance of regular assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, industrial users, and the public.

Eight (8) years verifiable work experience or training in one of the following fields or related fields:

Collection system operation and maintenance

Stormwater system operation and maintenance

Water treatment or distribution system operation and maintenance

Wastewater treatment system operation and maintenance

Industrial, Pre-treatment, septic system maintenance, water testing laboratory, or storm water management
