Automotive Technician - Hourly - Not Flat Rate

Compensation: $35 - $50 depending on experience

Full Time position

Sign on Bonus for Qualified Candidates.

Tom Dwyer Automotive Services is a progressive, community-oriented, ecologically responsible, full-service, multi-carline automotive service facility that has represented integrity and quality for almost 40 years. We certainly care about profit, but we aren’t a profit-driven shop. Tom believes top-quality service with our CLIENTS’ INTERESTS FIRST attracts and keeps the long term, happy clients we need to prosper. This philosophy has made us the largest independent auto repair shop in Portland, and now we’re adding to our team.

Our preference would be to hire someone with at least 3 years experience, and has ASE certification. However, more importantly we are looking for the right fit at our shop, so we encourage all skill levels/car lines to apply. ‘Automotive Technician’ is now the second most demanding career field in the U.S. in both knowledge and equipment, so we want high-functioning people who can communicate verbally and in writing, and who possess basic computer skills. You’ll need a clean driving record (MVR) and be insurable by our liability insurer. You should be comfortable working on a team, but be able to think on your feet and be self-directing enough to require minimal supervision after training. We’re looking for people ready to commit to the auto industry and our company in particular for years to come.

Our Technicians drive our repair recommendations to clients. You’ll inspect and evaluate each vehicle, decide what it ACTUALLY needs, and tell the Service Advisor. They’ll prioritize your advice and talk with the clients, but our service recommendations come from YOUR professional opinion of real-world requirements. No more doing pointless fluid changes because an Advisor recommended it from a service menu to meet a profit goal!

We believe Commission and Flat-rate pay blur the line of honesty and create a competitive ‘every-tech-for-themselves’ mentality, so our Advisors and Technicians are all paid hourly. Even more importantly, we respect, appreciate, and encourage our people. We know how hard they’ve worked to learn their trade so we try to build an environment where they can do their best work. You’ll never be asked to hurry through a job to meet book time or perform an unneeded service of any kind. You’ll be part of a team of ASE-Certified and ASE-Master-Certified Technicians who will help you figure out problems and expand your own skills. Our staff faces the lowest stress levels in the business because our philosophy is ‘more cars, less deadlines’. We work by appointment and most of our clients drop their vehicles off for the day, so there are no will-wait brake jobs or will-wait diagnosis. We demand a job done right so we give you the time and money to do it right.
