Ruston Paving Co., Inc., a commercial paving and site work contractor in Syracuse, has a job opening for a full-time Construction Superintendent / Field Operations Manager.

Ruston Paving is a commercial and industrial paving construction contractor with offices in New York, Virginia, and North Carolina. General Summary of the Position

Teamwork is a major part of every position at Ruston Paving, so it is important to note that, aside from all other listed responsibilities, you must be willing to assist others and be as productive as possible. The Field Operations Manager is responsible for coordinating and directing all labor, materials, and equipment for successful completion of construction projects as prescribed by Division Managers and Project Managers.

Essential Functions

The following is a list of essential functions for the position. These are responsibilities that an individual must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.

Prepares the following workday’s resources allocation planner (RAPTOR) in accordance with requests outlined on the multi-week planner and as per daily scheduling discussions with all Project Managers.

Coordinate and schedule heavy equipment, personnel, and materials to construction projects utilizing in-house resources and/or procuring outside vendors.

Maintain daily log as means of recording location and time for personnel and equipment movement.

Solicit, interview, and hire field and shop personnel and determine wages based on in-house wage scales.

Participate in foreman review process on a regular basis.

Participate in all field personnel performance and pay reviews; including drivers and shop employees.

Provide feedback to all drivers as needed utilizing the video-based safety systems, geo-tracking, and advocate the five keys of the Smith System of Defensive Driving.

Solicit competitive pricing and arrange for purchase of all non-project related supplies/consumables required for the completion of construction projects.

Solicit competitive pricing and arrange and coordinate material trucking contracts.

Keeps positive communication and relationships, and uses appropriate negotiation tactics with dealers and vendors for outsourced repairs, parts, materials, etc.

Utilize and maintain a current equipment repair schedule and work order system.

Solicit competitive pricing and oversee the purchase of parts and services for the repair of all company owned vehicles and equipment; and participates in the selling of company owned vehicles and equipment as needed.

Ensures that safety protocols are followed, PPE is utilized, and safe tools and equipment are used consistently with company and industry standards, as well as per the agreement with the customer for the project at hand.

Oversee the uniform service that is provided for all field employees.

Promotes a culture of safety by taking part in regular safety meetings to ensure that the crews understand expectations and have the proper PPE and equipment for the job.

Maintain and oversee the overall housekeeping of the shop and yard, including, but not limited to, location of equipment, vehicles and material stockpiles, parts storage areas, and small tool storage.

Oversee buildings and grounds maintenance/upkeep; including, but not limited to, landscaping, HVAC, and mechanical systems.

Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards as determined by law, jobsite requirements, and company policies.

All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Field Operations Manager is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the subordinate foremen, field personnel, shop personnel, and drivers within their specified division. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Supervisory skills and abilities include, but are not limited to:

Promotes and practices safety and pride in the work that the field and shop produce.

A good deal of responsibility falls on the Field Operations Manager to ensure that projects are running smoothly and safely with the proper staff and materials. Qualities we look for in a candidate include:

Strong computer skills, including being proficient in Microsoft Office and related software.

Education and Experience

A successful Field Operations Manager will have diverse educational qualifications and technical skills to deliver on the job. These include:

A two-year certificate or associate degree from a college or technical school; or 3+ years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Education and/or experience in a construction-related discipline is preferred.

Site excavation and/or paving experience is preferred.

Strong logistical skills as demonstrated by experience scheduling labor, materials, and equipment with a range of project sizes and requirements is a plus.

Experience managing people and effectively and timely resolving employee issues, complaints, and disputes.

Fluent in English. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record is required.
