Farm Crew

Description:

Ground Stone Farm is a 1-acre intensive, biologically focused, vegetable farm. We are located in Nambé, NM, 18 minutes north of Santa Fe. We are acequia irrigated and build soil health through minimal tilling, compost and compost teas, selective use of organic fertilizers, and cover cropping. The produce we grow is sold at 2 weekly Santa Fe Farmers Markets, as well as wholesale through Squash Blossom Local Food, La Montana Co-op, and other outlets.

Crew Member will work intimately with other people on the farm and under the supervision of the Farm Owner/Manager to assist with all aspects of the farm operation including:

Harvest: follow protocols to ensure high quality and consistent products (eg. kale in 1lb bunches, zucchini harvested at 6-8” into 10lb cases).

Wash and Pack: follow protocols to maximize safety, efficiency, and organization while processing vegetables (eg. sanitize sinks, change water as needed, dry salad mix thoroughly, inspect and remove bruised or tip burned leaves, bugs, weeds, utilize pack lists to weigh, bag, label, and deliver).

Teamwork and Reporting: be present for morning meetings, use Google Sheets to refer to plantings, track progress, make requested notes, and sign off on completed projects.

Field Health: Identify symptoms and report spread of diseases, pests, and potential soil health issues.

Bed Preparation: tarp, shovel compost, broad fork, operate BCS power harrow and flail mower.

Irrigation: maintain and operate pumps, filters, drip and sprinkler systems.

Seeding and Transplanting: becomes familiar with and operate Jang and Paper Pot seeder and transplanter.

Cultivation and Weeding: prevent germinating weed seeds and remove weeds using hand tools, mowing, and tarping.

Infrastructure: maintain and repair greenhouses, machinery, and equipment.

Requirements:

Experience: Minimum one year's experience working with row crops on a similar sized farm.

Communication: clear, kind, and direct in verbal, written, and interpersonal interactions.

Team work: Maintain a positive attitude and curious nature. Work respectfully with a diverse team understanding that we collaborate with other departments, upper management, managing partners, and owners. Capacity to be both self-motivated and collaborative (eg. if unsure of best action, check SOP manual, confer with co-workers, confer with managers).

Special Skills: Ability to balance efficiency and attention to detail. Working knowledge of plant life cycles. Operating equipment, saving seed, propagating native plants, orchard work, and construction skills are a plus.

Enthusiasm: appreciation for principles of ethical agriculture, passionate about plants, food and farming.

Endurance: Ability to perform manual labor: walk or stand for eight or more hours per day in all weather, sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, push, pull and lift items weighing 40-50 pounds. Perform tasks safely and effectively.
