- Analyze server performance and gather operation data to determine and recommend modifications, plan upgrades and installations of new software and migration procedures, provide all needed enhancements, maintain network (Need thorough knowledge of VLAN) and system security, develop, and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
- Research and implement new technology.
- Work with development team and to determine the performance threshold levels and capabilities, as well as data limitations of the servers and systems.
- Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.
- Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
- Report on project status user requirements, project specifications, servers' status, and operation activities.
- Maintain data center environmental and monitoring server; ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical host computer resources.
- Delineate procedures and guidelines and performance analysis documents. Write software documentation and direct software programming requests.
- Evaluate existing hardware and software compatibility and coordinate with software development teams to evaluate interfaces and develop specifications to resolve user problems. Train and support users in new software, determine users' software needs, and install software.
- Ensure correct encryption and security of all critical data, develop, and maintain safeguarding plans for files and databases (prevent unauthorized access, and enable backup/restore ability and fail proofing). Regulate network access to maintain operation, monitor network, servers, computers virus reports and determine appropriate security plans and prevention steps.
- Manage and mentor other junior IT staff in all the above.
- A BS in Computer Science or related fields is a minimum requirement. Additionally, a successful candidate should feel comfortable in the following areas (or at least a good number of them)
- Operating Systems: Unix, Linux, Windows 10 & 11, Windows 2019 & 2022 Datacenter
- Databases: Microsoft SQL Server 2019 and MySQL
- Office Tools: Office 365 Administration, SharePoint
- Windows Servers: Windows Active Directory Domain Controllers (preferably Azure AD) and DNS/DHCP Servers
- Virtualization: Hyper-V, VMWare, and Citrix
- Application Servers: IIS, Apache, Apache Tomcat, etc.
- The position is on-site only (not remote) including support work for university IT infrastructure.
- Knowledge of LMS (Learning Management Systems) such as Sakai, Canvas, etc.
- Familiarity with academic/teaching environments
