POSITION PURPOSE: The Art Educator facilitates age and grade appropriate experiences in the MGMA’s classroom and in outreach to local schools that connect students to the power of imagination through the arts. The Art Educator aims to assist with the implementation of inquiry-based, hands-on educational experiences that focus on current exhibitions and offers students the opportunity to connect with the arts and artists of our region. The Art Educator reports to the Executive Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)

Creates standards-based, grade-appropriate curriculum for outreach programs, and onsite classes and camps

Conducts interactive, inquiry-based programs, classes and summer/holiday camps for students in grades pre-K-12

Maintains the Museum Classroom by helping organize files, supplies, and equipment

Collaborates with other departments for educational purposes such as classes, tours, workshops, and outreach programs when assigned

Preps materials for classes which includes set up/clean up, creation of props and class examples

General – Works with the Museum Manager to develop marketing materials for upcoming classes and camps.

Schedules time effectively so as to balance work requests from multiple programs. Keeps accurate time sheets and submits records by the stated deadline. Attends staff meetings, committee meetings, focus groups and Board retreats when necessary. Complies with professional behavior and grooming standards to best represent the HAC as a member of its staff. Communicates needs and opportunities for professional development as dictated by evolutionary nature of position responsibilities. Maintains impeccable aesthetics of designated areas. Other tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

B.A in Arts Education, Studio Arts, Art History, or related fields

Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills

Maintain knowledge of current art education policies, standards, theories and practice in public and private schools and museum contexts

Meet and greet students and parents

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community organization leaders.

Ability to work independently as well as in tandem with HAC staff

Knowledge of Humboldt’s cultural diversity

A valid Driver’s License

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Understanding of social-emotional practices

Experience working with groups of children, teachers, and families, especially in an informal educational setting

Experience making art and/or leading hands-on art lessons

Deep understanding of educational theories or techniques, and child development

Ability to work independently, with little supervision, and uphold Museum's policies

Must have can-do attitude, creativity, flexibility, and strong problem-solving skills
