Soil / Geotechnical Lab Technician


Our client is a well-respected and established firm located in Albuquerque. You'll work in a small research laboratory, on different contracts for multiple clients in government, environment, construction and engineering industries.

Based on qualifications, you may start at the technician level, but this position has a lot of opportunity for growth. Our client is looking to fill a tech level, as well as a possible future lab manager level position. These positions are intended to be permanent, but may initially be contract for a few months to see how you like the job and how well you do in it.

Initial primary responsibilities include measuring soil physics and geotechnical properties, as well as assembling testing equipment and monitoring research experiments. The job duties include a lot of moving soil samples and entering data. This is a very physical job, mostly indoors in the lab but occasionally in the field.


Knowledgeable in the application of basic math skills and scientific principles to laboratory testing and data interpretation.

A Bachelor of Science degree in an earth sciences area such as Geoscience, Geology, Environmental, Earth Sciences, Hydrology, Geophysics, Mineralogy, Volcanology, Forestry, Chemistry, Biology (not health care related) or experience in Civil / Structural Engineering with soil stability, or related scientific field is great, but they will consider direct applicable experience in lieu of a science degree.

Experienced working in a testing lab, field work, sampling and QA.

Working knowledge of MS Excel and Word.

Able to read detailed increments on various instrumentation accurately.

Able to read, record, accurately report, and interpret data as established by standard laboratory practices.

Prior experience with water and soil sampling preferred.

Radiation safety experience is a big plus.

Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude is a plus.


Able to lift and carry 50 lb. buckets up to 10 ft. repeatedly around the lab for a few hours at a time.

Able to perform laboratory testing tasks while standing on a ladder at heights up 4’ above the floor.

Work in a standing position for full work shift.

Perform repetitious physical movements continuously during a work shift which includes squatting.


Maturity, good interpersonal communication skills, and ability to work independently.

Someone who is meticulous with a very high attention to detail, committed to quality

Works well with others, enjoys learning and loves to share knowledge.

Understands contractual obligations to clients and committed to deadlines and providing excellent customer service.
